FESTIVAL NEWS
|
Pardon the pun, but the 2002 Laurel Festival of the Arts, "Czech, Please...," gets a heavy dose of Bohemian music. High spirited furiants, soul searching dumka, and other heart-on-sleeve folk idioms abound in our collection of chamber music works by Bedrich Smetana, Antonin Dvorak and Josef Suk. Please join us in May and June at the Mauch Chunk Opera House in charming, historic Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania as we take a close look at music from Prague and perhaps you, too, will come away from it all thinking, "Czech, Please!"

This season, violinists Soovin Kim and Desiree Ruhstrat, violist Robert Rinehart, cellist Fred Sherry and pianist Mihae Lee make their Laurel Festival of the Arts debuts. They join a long, distinguised list of artists who have appeared at the festival including violinists Cho-Liang Lin, Anne Akiko Meyers and Lara St. John, violists Paul Coletti, Toby Appel and Cynthia Phelps, and pianists Gilbert Kalish, Jon Kimura Parker, Awadagin Pratt and Andre-Michel Schub.

Recently, Festival Artists were presented by the Chamber Music Society of Bethlehem in three of their six concerts. The concerts took place at Foy Hall in Moravian College, Pennsylvania. Violinists Jennifer Frautschi and Carmit Zori, violists James Dunham and Alan Gilbert, and pianists Ken Noda and Ignat Solzhenitsyn made their first Laurel Festival appearance in the Bethlehem series.

Each June, WVIA FM in northern Pennsylvania presents a weekly special broadcasting all the performances recorded from the May and June concerts at the Mauch Chunk Opera House. Meanwhile, WGBH FM in Boston and National Public Radio continue to be a national carriers of Festival concerts. So while you can catch the Laurel Festival of the Arts on your local radio station practically year-round, why not catch the excitement of the real thing in person. Call (570) 325-4439 today to get your tickets now!
