Violist Toby Hoffman performs internationally as soloist, chamber musician and conductor. In the USA he has performed at many of the most prestigious music festivals including those of Aspen, Ravinia, Saratoga, Chamber Music Northwest, Marlboro, La Jolla and Seattle. Internationally, he has appeared at the festivals of Salzburg, Taipei, Consonances in France, Napoli, Cremona, Wigmore Hall in London, La Scala in Milano, and others. He has made orchestral appearances with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, Florida Orchestra and Prague Chamber Orchestra, among others. With the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Mr. Hoffman has performed on dozens of occasions, both on tour and at Alice Tully Hall. Recently, he performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Charles Dutoit and at the Salzburg Festival, La Scala and the 92nd Street Y in New York playing chamber music with pianist Maurizio Pollini.

Mr. Hoffman is a member of the Artistic Committee of Bargemusic in New York. As such, he is responsible for the programming of between 28 and 32 chamber music concerts annually.

Mr. Hoffman, born in Vancouver, B.C., is from a distinguished family of musicians including his mother, Esther Gazer, with whom he studied both the violin and viola, his father, Irwin Hoffman, a conductor who has held several posts as a music director including the Vancouver Symphony, the Florida Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony and his brother, cellist Gary Hoffman. He holds both Bachelor and Masters degrees in Music from the Juilliard School, where he studied viola with Paul Doktor. Currently he plays a 1628 Antonio and Hieronymous Amati viola made in Cremona, Italy, which formerly belonged to Queen Victoria of England.

Mr. Hoffman has had the opportunity to share his musical talents as an educator. Far two years he held the position of Artist in Residence at Harvard University and he has been a member of the faculties of Carnegie-Mellon University and the Steans Institute at the Ravinia Festival in addition to giving numerous master-classes at prominent conservatories around the world such as the Manhattan School of Music in New York City and the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam.

Mr. Hoffman's discography includes a recent release of French chamber music with Andre Previn for BMG and almost all of the chamber music works by Mozart with violinist Salvatore Accardo including all six quintets for two violas, both violin and viola duos, and the Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra. His recordings can be found on many different recording companies including CRT, Phillips, Sony, Nuova Era, Dynamic, Arabesque,and Teldec.

As a conductor, Toby Hoffman has been working under the tutelage of the legendary Finnish master Jorma Panula, who has been the teacher of many of the most accomplished young conductors today including Esa-Pekka Salonen,and Jukka-Pekka Saraste. Orchestras that Mr. Hoffman has worked with include the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, Plzen Radio Symphony, Vaasa City Symphony, Kuopio City Orchestra, the Verona Sinfonietta, the Chamber Orchestra of Crevillente, Spain, and the Amsterdam Chamber Orchestra. His repertoire ranges from the large symphonic works to the works for chamber orchestra.
