Recognized as one of today's most gifted artists, and enjoying an active career as
both pianist and conductor, Ignat Solzhenitsyn's lyrical and poignant
interpretations have won him critical acclaim throughout the world.
Highlights of next season include a tour of the United States with the Royal Philharmonic and conductor Daniele Gatti which includes a performance in Lincoln Center at Avery Fisher Hall. He will also play/conduct the Nashville Symphony, perform recitals in Philadelphia, and appear with the Brentano Quartet in London's famed Wigmore Hall, among other performances. Mr. Solzhenitsyn's 1998-1999 season includes performances with the Seattle Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic under Yuri Temirkanov. Mr. Solzhenitsyn will lead Concerto Soloists, together with the Philadelphia Singers, in two performances of Bach's St. John Passion. He also appears in recital in Toronto, Philadelphia, Louisville, Jacksonville, Miami and throughout North America. In addition, he performs in recital at the Ludwigsburg Festival in Germany as well as in a special collaboration with the Borodin Quartet in Moscow, and with the St. Petersburg Quartet in New York City. In January he appeared as guest conductor of the Vermont Symphony. Last season, Ignat Solzhenitsyn appeared with the Chicago Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the New York Chamber Symphony, the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra in Japan and on a thirteen concert US tour with James DePriest and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo. He was invited to play at the Ojai Festival in a four-hand recital with pianist Mitsuko Uchida as well as in a chamber concert with the Brentano Quartet. In addition, he performed in recital at Sviatoslav Richter's December Evenings Festival in Moscow at the Tonhalle in Zurich and at the Tisch Center at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. In recent seasons, his extensive touring schedule in the United States and Europe has included performances with such world-class ensembles as the Boston Symphony, the Saint Louis Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony, the National Symphony, the Montreal Symphony, the Orchestre de Paris and the Israel Philharmonic and collaborations with such distinguished conductors as Herbert Blomstedt, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Mstislav Rostropovich, Andre Previn, Gerard Schwarz, Charles Dutoit, Krzysztof Penderecki, David Zinman, Jerzy Semkov, James Conlon and Lawrence Foster. In addition to his recital appearances in the United States at Philadelphia's Academy of Music, St. Paul's Ordway Theatre, UC Berkeley's Hertz Hall, and many others from coast to coast, Mr. Solzhenitsyn has also given numerous recitals in Europe, Japan and Latin America in such major musical centers as London, Moscow, Tokyo, Milan and St. Petersburg. An avid chamber musician, Mr. Solzhenitsyn has been a regular participant at the Marlboro Festival and at the Evian Festival in France where he performed with the Emerson String Quartet. Ignat Solzhenitsyn is Principal Conductor of the Concerto Soloists Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, with whom he has worked closely since 1993, conducting them in subscription series as well as on tour in the United States. Born in Moscow, Mr. Solzhenitsyn began his musical development under the guidance of Rudolf Serkin. He then studied piano with Maria Curcio in London and with Gary Graffman at the Curtis Institute of Music, where he also studied conducting with OttoWerner Mueller.
